More Lichen

Lichen

Coming home today from buying the Saturday Herald I took a detour and checked out some trees at the local school. Looking for lichen forms mostly. Here are some I quite like.

A new clay body in the works

I have been working with a clay that is full of small bits of fire brick, but now it's time to move on. The new clay will be a composite featuring silica and limonite lumps. This will hopefully give added interest to the clay body and make it unique to my work. Also feldspar may be added if it is available. Watch this space for some test pieces.

Under - Iron over ash

This experimental vase has a pure hardwood ash glaze over iron oxide. The Kauri table is not the best background but what can you do sometimes?

Another attempt to produce wood fired effects in the electric.

Experiments with Cabbage Tree ash

The cabbage tree produces leaves that take a long time to break down, to me this indicated that perhaps the leaves had good amounts of silica in them, but this is not the case. However each test of this ash results in crusty deposits randomly placed across the surface. Almost a wood fired effect in an electric kiln. This is the sort of surprise that makes it worthwhile trying out these things.

Arakawa Toyozo

A great master of Shino, this image was on a 35mm slide I have. I believe it is from a book, but do not know which one.
